Who is Urban Fresh?
Hamish grew up int he Waikato working on the family beef and sheep farm and has always enjoyed working with the land and nature. Hamish and his wife Barbs along with their two children run the boutique growing setup in the Wairarapa.
Barbs has a long history of marketing experience and also has a passion for creating such a neat, healthy food option.
The team are currently producing about 30 – 50 Kilos of gourmet mushrooms per week and are now also producing their ‘Ready To Fruit’ mini farm.
We mission is to become a well known brand in NZ and to be able to provide quality sustainable food options for many years to come. We aim to cut back on our carbon footprint through producing a better food alternative. We believe mushrooms are a big player in our health and well-being as well as being great for helping our planet.
Why we do what we do
Now more than ever, we need to be conscious of the effect we have on the environment. Intensive farming of meat is having an adverse effect and we need to bring the balance back. Mushrooms are a great source of protein and trace elements and vitamins and are so versatile. They can grow virtually anywhere and this is what makes them so great. With having a young family we feel it is our duty to teach our children how to live sustainable and how to grow food and where it comes from.
How we do what we do
We produce quality fresh food and provide them to the local community in the hopes of creating a more sustainable future.
We have spent numerous hours researching and testing the best mix of ingredients to use to grow the perfect mushrooms. We use a blend that incorporates our local used coffee grounds. If you are a cafe or restaurant and would like to join our urban coffee recycle program, please get in touch.
